Lisa Kane
Sooner... than later
St. Paul singer-songwriter Lisa Kane released 2001's best folk compact disc as the year was barely getting under way. And she did it with the beautiful simplicity that is the very heart and soul of true folk music.
She just walked into a room with her guitar, lit some candles and started playing. No heavy production, no overdubs. Just songs of romantic love ("She Gave Me You"), anxiety about the future ("Which Road"), dreams and images from nature. The crowning achievement of her efforts is "Sage," that rare kind of folk anthem that makes a plea for social justice without getting self-rightous. She simply describes her dream of a better world while trying to survive in this one.
